Disappearing Desktop in XP

Hi All
I look after a small peer to peer network at work, and have just upgraded all eight machines from 98 to XP Pro.
However one of the machines - NEC 900M Direction (nothing special - all the usual FDD, 30GigHDD, CD-RW etc.) has developed an annoying tic. Every time I click on Windows Explorer - the whole dsektop (all the icons etc.) disappears and then about 10 seconds later they all re-appear. Same thing happens if I try to search for a file - as soon as I select 'all Files and folders' the box disappears and throws me back to the desktop - where after a few seconds the icons re-appear.
As you can imagine - not much work gets done on this machine - though once it gets through to an Application such as Word or Internet Explorer - things seem to firm up as long as I don't have to navigate to a place to save a file or open one - as soon as I try to do that - the d"*" thing goes down again.

anyone with any ideas about what might be causing this - and/or what to do.

Right click my computer, go to properties. UNcheckthe box that says: For fast searching allow indexing service to index this file.


Right click My computer again, go to explore. Go to view. Folder Options. Uncheck the box that says : Automatically search for network files and printers.


If that doesnt help just change the setting back to the old way. Those are the only things I can think of right now that may help though.
