windows xp locks up while trying to format/install fresh

Hi,

not sure if this is the right forum, but I recently took my computer in to a repair shop because it locked up right on startup. They told me that I had a virus and had me buy another harddrive. I had two working harddrives already... So I bought the harddrive, hooked it up and powered it on. I got to the winxp installation screen and it seemed to load all the necessary installation files then it said "setup will now start windows" and it hung there. I tried walking away for 15 min or so and it was still there. If i remember correctly it should of taken me to another screen where I could format my hd. I've tried different windows disc's and have repeated this many times and it still locks up at the beginning of the install screen. Any ideas?

check your powersupply to make sure it's putting out enough power. check you cpu heatsink fan, check case fans to make they are all working...make sure you dont have dust buildup on the components.

oh no. its a brand new harddrive. no files on it. I was using a winxp cd for the installation. It would hang after it installed all the install files from the cd.
