Volume icon in taskbar

A couple months ago, for some reason the volume icon dissapeared from my taskbar. When I go to control pane and click on Sounds and Audio devices, I get a window to click to Place Volume control in taskbar.., but when I click it, I get the Error Message that says, Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it use ad/remove programs in Control Panel.

I can find nothing in control panel relating it installation of the program. What am I missing? The icon has been on the taskbar and working fine, until recently. Not sure why it dissapeared.

I am using Win XP home
IE6

Thanks for any help,
Earl

Hi ... See if this help >>> Right click your taskbar area and select properties , Have the "Taskbar " tab selected and see if you have a check mark on " Hide inactive icons " If so ? remove the check mark , click apply , Ok , Then restart your computer , See if that help ...

Hi ... Go to Start/Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices. On the Volume Tab under Device Volume, put a check in the box that reads: Place volume icon in the taskbar

I'm curious is its listed in the Entertainment area ? Can you go to the Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Entertainment and see as to whether the Volume Control is listed ??

When I go to control panel and do as you suggested, thats when I get the error message about the program not installed, as in my first post. Dont know how it could have gotten uninstalled. No, it is not in the entertainment window. I may add, I do have sound, just no longer have the icon in the taskbar to control it's level. It was there until a couple months ago.
