File sharing Transfer?

Ok lets try this again. Dell PC to a Toshiba laptop, both are running XP OS home additions. 24oGB in Dell, 40 GB in laptop. Just wanting to share my music files from my Dell pc to this toshiba laptop, not take them off just put them onto his laptop, but after that we will not be sharing the file.

if this is to simple a procedure please let me know.
I am trying to figure out how I can share my files from my home pc to a laptop pc. I wanted to help a friend out and get him some music on his laptop. I have a motorola dsl modem, that I think can double as a router, is this correct. I want to be able to share my music files with his laptop, without taking these off of my machine. I have a dvd burner that I could also use, but that seems to be a pain, as it is roughly 4-5 GB

So basically it would be a small home network setup? Any advice would be greatly appreciated or tutorials would be great also.

The first thing that you need to do is check whether or not the modem that you have can also act as a router. Easy way to check this is to see if the back of it has 4 ethernet ports. Your modem's manual will also be helpful for configuring the network.

If the modem isn't a router, you'll probably want to get one. They're also useful in terms of security, as most of them will act as a firewall for your home network.

Here's a good website to get you started on how to setup the home network. http://www.chicagotech.net/ They've got a bunch of useful guides for networking.

Hope this helps.
