Unhappy please help- changing windows XP to English

Dear everyone, thank you for reading my message.

The problem is that I was given a laptop that has the Windows XP Professional edition in some foreign language.

The laptop was given to me without any system software which would allow me to reinstall Windows XP Prof.
I went to a staple store located around the neighborhood, and I talked to some of the employees there about my current problem and they told me that I would need to buy the full version of Windows XP Professional edition which is currently around 299+ tax.

I though it was crazy and I went back home to see if there was anything I could do. After a lot of thought, I made up my mind into buying the MS XP Prof. Edition. But luckily when I was about to pay to the cashier, I ended up being 12 dollars short.

I spoke to another employee and he told me to try to speak in forums regarding this problem because you will find people who are very helpful. He explained to me how the internet is a place of constant exchange of knowledge between people. Well, here I am and I wanted to know if any of you can help me regarding changing the Windows XP Professional Edition into the English language.

Keep in mind that my laptop doesn't have a floppy disk, has a CD-RW.

Just in case someone knows this language, the green icon to the bottom-left side of windows has the words "nyck" instead of start.

I appreciate any feedback or any help any of you can give me.

"Nyck" is possibly Swedish.

You'll need to format and buy a new XP CD to re-install UNLESS it is already an English version of XP professional with the Multilingual User Interface which has had Swedish added to it.

So now you need to open the Control panel, and then find Regional and Language Options which is the globe icon, then click on languages (Middle tab) and see if the drop-down window at the bottom has English as well as Swedish.

If you are lucky and it has then choose English, click Apply and OK and re-boot the system.

I have XP with the MUI and can change from English to French. I'll try adding the Swedish language pack and see what the translations are.

I also have a much better price for XP Home and Pro. Do you actually need Pro for any particular reason?

I was sent this link from Ohio http://www.buysoftware.ws/pd_microsoft_windows.cfm

I had to pay the full price to get the extra languages I needed, btw.

Well Control Panel stayed as Control Panel. I have changed my Start button to read XP and it also stayed that way, so I am non the wiser on that one althought I see 'Starta' on some entries when I open the control panel.

Regional and Language Options - changes to - Nationella Inställingar och Språkinställningar.

Language changes to Språk and Apply changes to Verkställ, and the drop down language menu should include - Svenska - if that is any help.

Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI)

Quoting from that article...

"The quick answer to these questions is that Windows XP lets you enter, edit, and view data in many languages, but you can only change the language used for menus and dialog boxes by installing the Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI), an add-on to the English version of Windows XP Professional."

I also mentioned that I had changed the Start button to read XP so someone might have changed yours to read NYCK, which is really quite easy to do. Nyck could be someone's name or NY-CK could be something to do with New York.

What does it say for Help and Support? That might give a better clue.
