Problems with LCD replacement monitor

New to the forum .

I have a problem that is driving me mad. I have been happily using my old monitor when a friend gave me his old flatscreen LCD monitor as a gift. The actual make (on the base) says Mitac - model number LC551. Not much information I can find on the web about it . Anyway , I am having problems such as freezing screen , rebooting and driver not responding on it . I am running XP and have it plugged into a Radeon 9200 graphics card. When i look on control panel it says plug and play monitor "standard monitor types" (not the manufacturers name) , driver version 5.1.2001.0 .

I downloaded the latest radeon drivers package from their website (catalyst) and this is running. I currently have it plugged into the VGA socket on the graphics card - as opposed to the DVI-I socket - make any difference?

I have the monitor set at 60hz and resolution is 1024 x 768.

Any suggestions would be helpful. I dont have the disc that came with the monitor originally , which may have helped . the Mitac website does not seem to list this monitor either .

Thanks simon

Actual monitor drivers usually don't make that big of a difference.

You never mentioned if you had tried plugging your original monitor back in. Try this and if the problem persists, then it's not a problem with the new monitor. If it stops with the old monitor, then chances are that there's something wrong with the new monitor.

If the problem is still there with the old monitor, make sure that your system is clean. Check out the Software Disscussion section of the forum for tips on how to clean your system of viruses/spyware.
