Unhappy Win XP & 98 network neighbourhood Problems with cross-link cable.

Hi,

I have got a strange problem:
On one PC Win 98 is installed, on the other one Windows XP. Both PC's are connected with LAN cards (cross link cable).
After running the XP home network wizard, I can see the XP PC from the Windows 98 PC, transfer files, access shared printers, etc.
Once I look at the network neighbourhood on my XP PC, the Windows 98 PC does not appear at all. It is strange because I can see the Win XP PC from the one running 98, but not viceversa.
Maybe someone knows how I can resolve that problem.
Thanks in advance.

I assume you mean "my network places."
Have you added the 98 pc by "add a network place"?

I tried to add the win 98 pc to my workgroup on the XP pc, but it seems like he doesn't find him. I can even use the XP PC's printer on my win 98 pc, but not viceversa.
If I try to add it on my XP pc, the other one does not appear as a ressource in my workgroup (Mshome).
Can anyone help me out?

Try the windows xp wizard disk.

Be careful with what you options you pick with it.

I'm wrinting since i have a similar problem : i would like to network a pc with w98 to a PC with XP.

both have network cards. I connect both using a cross over cable. I had to buy a PCI network card (Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet) for the XP. It detected it but a warning appears : "a network cable is unplugged" even with both cards connected by the cable.

More strange : I ran the "Set up a home or small office network" wizard, I select the "Local Area Connection 3 Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC" although unplugged ticking "Ignore disconnected network hardware"

Next i select "This computer connects directly to the Internet. The other computers on my network connect to the Internet through this computer."

Next, for "Select your Internet connection from the following list" I select ", Local Area Connection Modem ADSL USB POTS (RFC1483 Mode)"

Some extra easy steps like naming the workgroup, then "Create a Network Setup Disk". It stops with the error "Cannot copy file: Cannot read from the source file or disk." and the floopy is error free...

A friend of mine told me that the problem could be a defective network cable ... I couldn't check with another. He also says that a normal (non crossed) cable will also do ...

thanks for your attention.

I think my printer ports are set wrong; do the server port & the printer port have to be the same ?
