DC RW discs don't work

Got some Memorex 1 - 4x rewrite discs at Xmas. Put in generic IDE 4x8x32 CD writer or in LITEON DVD drive won't work. Neither drive gets up to speed. Operating light keeps flashing on CD drive. HDD llight keeps flashing on DVD drive- then when disc is ejected system refuses to believe there IS a DVD drive.
Both will read other discs and CD will write to other discs.
OS - XP home.

Is it my system or the discs?

If the indicator on both drives flashes then this means the disk is unreadable. Have you written anything to these disks?

Have an 18 MG file on disc - burned it at work - CD nor DVD will read it.
Get same lack of speed when tested a blank disk.

Then the disk is burned incorrectly, or the work drive may be out of alignment, or the burn format is incompatable.
