Unhappy Erratic login driving me nuts - Windows cannot load the user's profile.....

Running XP on my machine which can pre installed and bundled with it. Sometimes (too often!!) when I log in at the Welcome page, I ge the message;

Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system.

It then proceeds to count down 30 seconds unless you click ok.

Other times though, I just type in the password and heh ho, its fine. I have thought about creating another administrator, but then I lose all the setting I previously had and to be honest I'm nervous about copying directory tree's about as I not sure I should be doing that.

Has anyone else had this problem / can anyone help me with this?

well....

If you are the only person using your computer, then you should just disable all other accounts but the admin, disable logins, enable auto login. And not ever have to worry about logging in again.

If you have multiple users on the account then im not sure of a fix...maybe try reinstalling your OS files.

Personally, I gave up on the "users" thing in XP. It was too much hassle - especially with software. I was constantly plagued with strange occurrances and problems. And from what I've seen in the forum, others experience the same things. I set aside a partition with another OS dedicated to other users - its a lot easier for me that way. However, in linux, the user settings work wonderfully.

Hi Guys,

Thanks a lot for your suggestions, I have got rid of my one other user, I have turned off my welcome screen but am not sure how to do an auto login, I am running XP Home edition, so not sure if I have this capability.

Will try it a few times to see what it does.

Just wanted to pass on my thanks for your replies.

I just started having a similar problem with my WIndows XP home edition. It seems simply removing the password protection has cured the problem. Let's hope at least.
