Desktop ions and startup bar disappeared

Hi,
My friend has a problem, when he starts the window xp, the only thing appears is the wallpaper. All the icons on the desktop disappear, as well as the startup bar. Right click and left click are not working too. The only thing he can do is to Ctrl-Alt-Del to invoke the Tasks Manager. He has also tried the save mode but not much help either. What should he do now? Re-install everything? Please help

Right-click on the desktop Menu -> Arrange Icons By -> Show Desktop Icons (make sure it's enabled).

Does the taskbar reappear when the mouse is moved to the bottom of the screen? Uncheck Auto Hide the Taskbar on the Taskbar Properties dialogue.

Well, the right click is no longer working, and the taskbar will not appear when moving the mouse to the bottom of the screen. I invoked CMD from task manager, and type in 'Control', but it cannot invoke the control panel either.

Please help

Is safe mode working ok?

If you can, see if you have a restore point from before this.

Try the recovery option from the xp cdrom.

Did this happen after a software installation or windows update?

My taskbar and icons are gone..........

Hi, I am new to this website. I have the same problem with my computer. My background and screensaver work fine. The problem is that after loging in, neither the taskbar or desktop icons appear. I tried the restoration process--didn't help, I tried the right clicking and nothing comes up, the only way I can access my folders/programs/documents/internet is by hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del to invoke the Tasks Manager.

Please help me, I tried all night to figure out the problem but nothing seems to help.

Click Here to open Kelly's Korner.

Scroll down to line 195 and in the right-hand column, click on "Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar" to download a small vbs file.

Once downloaded, run it according to the directions at the top of the Kelly's Korner page.

All the scripts on that page are safe (virus free). I've used many of them and they've all worked.
