Question Installing XP

I want to install Windows XP on a machine that is already running XP. The new one has SP2. Can you install over the existing OS or do you have to format C and start clean? If I do need to format, can I use the 98 boot disk, or is it different?

Hi... First off what kind of Windows xp are you talking about ? What type of disc is it ( Home or Pro ) ? OEM , Upgrade or Retail versions ... If your only reason to reinstall your xp is because you now have SP2 on a disc I would believe ? then you don't need to reinstall your xp , Just go to Microsoft update site and download the updates , which will install SP2 , So you don't need to reinstall but rather just to update your system ... Also if you have a Retail version of xp ? Then you would use this xp disc when ever you want to reformat or what not ... Have a view at these sites below , just click the URL and it will take you there

Thanks for the feed back. I don't want to say anything to get me kicked off of the forum, but no, it is not a retail copy of XP, nor is the new one I want to put on a retail copy. You get my meaning right? I will use the sites you posted. I believe it is XP Pro I am trying to upgrade with a Titanium edition. I thought that with XP you normally did not need to format, that it formatted the drive as you installed the OS. Again, thank you for the feed back.

If you run setup from the new cdrom it will give you the option of upgrading the existing installation or doing a completely new installation. It also recommends the upgrade path, which obviously wouldn't necessitate formatting.

I was going to slipstream the OS with the SP2. The copies of XP I have to burn on to the cd are almost too big to fit along with the SP2. Can I delete a few of the extras and then burn it on the disk?

Take a look at Nlite for slipstreaming Xp with service packs and drivers. You can also leave out a lot of unwanted crap. Very nice. You can make an install cd of under 300 mb. Its very east to use.
