Up-grade Problems

I wish to up-grade from Win 98 to WinXP Pro but as yet with little success. My system is as follows :
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
512 MB DDR Ram
2 Hard Drives: First, 20GB with 2 partitions. Second drive of 80GB, 1 partition running from a Raid Array.
Nvidia FX 5500 with 256MB Ram
DVD Rom Drive
Lite-On CD Writer
CD Player
I have made a boot disc and on running get as far as the following message:
"Scanning PCI bus using mechanism #2"
and the system then stops and progresses no further.
Any help would be gratefully received.
