XP Crash on Hardware Scan
Okay, so I bought a new hard drive for my old computer (the "family" one) and reinstalled Windows Xp onto with the disk I was given with my system (XP with SP1 and I ordered an SP2 disc seperately). Everything went fine, except for 24 files that couldn't be transferred but the only crucial one was driver.cab (\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386) which I took from my other system as well as all of the other files and appropriately placed them.
Now, when I finally booted everything ran fine, no problems, but I noticed Plug and Play wasn't working. So I checked services and it was started and I enabled Universal just in case (I know it's bad, but I had to try) and restarted. Again, PnP doesn't run on any device (microphone, usb driver, printer) so I run a hardware scan. Crash. It restarts and shows the "recovered from a serious error" message with sending error reports and such. Then I do another scan and it works fine, and I installed my usb drive and audio devices. But now, when I try to install my printer, the drivers can't see it and every hardware scan crashes the system.
I've done a recovery install (same files couldn't be copied, but the only important is driver.cab) and I still can't fix this. I've upgraded to SP2 before even going online, antivirused, updated everything and then scanned for viruses, scanned for malware of any sort and the system is clean. Help.
