Sound doesnt work Help!?

My sound doesnt work at all ,I think because my drive d was missing now it back up again.
In my volume control ( which is disable w/ sounds ,audio thing )it says install mixer device.But I couldnt find it?
In my windows media player it says: no sound device found

I have windows xp
A northgate computer

Someone PLEASE HELP ME!

hold the windows key and press pause. select hardware and click device manager. In there is there, what is under sound, game and video controllers? Is there anything with a yellow question mark next to it under other devices?
