Oh for the love of all that is good and sacred!

Hi all. I've exhaused everything that I know (which ain't much) so I'd appreciate some help.

I've had SP2 installed since it was released without a problem, BUT...

Now, I cannot launch and .msi, .msc files or get into the device manager, regedit or any administrative tools (i.e. services!!!). I also can't launch ms paint or calculator!!! I tried unistalling SP2 and everything goes back to normal. I then reinstalled SP2 and now back to the same problem. I do have admin rights on my computer.

I can't get to services to see what services are running or into the registry to check any keys. When I try to launch these files, etc, I don't get an error just an hourglass for a split second and then nothing....

Any ideas will be helpful at this point.

Thanks!!!!

Mike T.

I've got Avast Antivirus and Microsoft Antispyware and they are run automatically at 2am every morning. I don't think its a virus but I do think that that something in the kernel is corrupt so that these files won't run.

Does anyone know what the dependencies are running calculator, paint, and .msi and .msc extentions????

Thanks.

You might like to try running sfc /scannow to see if it will restore whatever is corrupted in your windows install.

Insert XP disk,

Start>Run>sfc /scannow (note the space between sfc and the forward slash)

Good luck.

Hi. I ran sfc /scannow earlier but at the end of the scan there was no dialog box to say it was completed. The status bar went to 100% and then the dialog box went away.

Thanks,

Mike
