Partition problems

Hi everyone,
I am running win xp and i want to install linux but for that i need to first partition my hard drive. I am using partition magic. I wish to know wether i can create the linux partition anywhere on my hard drive or only at the begining. Im asking this because i heard that the BIOS of older machines cannot boot further than the 1024 cylinder. I bought a new computer only months ago does that 1024 cylinder thing aply to me.
Thanks ,

Always leave windows on the first partition. Linux can be booted from anywhere. Make a 1 gig partition for swap and another 5 gigs(or more) for the operating system. Have fun.
