Unhappy IE Problems

Hi, My first post so please be gentle! I recently uninstalled my copies of Norton Systemworks and Internet Security. Since doing this I have been unable to view my gmail account, Windows Update page and also drop down menus on a website I often visit do not appear. Can anyone tell me how to solve this! By all means tell me how stupid I am but only if you can solve the problem! Many thanks
Stone
