ftp problem

Greetings:

I am new to the forum. Of course, a problem has brought me here.

I run XP and recieve automatic updates from Microsoft. Maybe a bad thing?

My computer, as of last week, cannot communicate with an ftp server over the internet. This is true for my ftp program (WS-FTP Pro) as well as trying to "manually" connect using my browser.

Message says that I connect and that connection is terminated by host computer.

I have a feeling an update to Windows XP has zapped me.

Can someone offer a suggestion?
