Hard Drives acting a bit strange...

Hello,

Yesterday I got a strange problem on my hard drive F which it disappeared and thanks to some help here I was able to get it back in place.

Everything was working fine afterwards.

This morning I wake up deciding to play some game so I insert the game cd in the DVD drive E and await the start-up screen of the game to come.

Nothing happens. I click on "My Computer" and strangely it does not show the game icon on the DVD drive. I open the drive and all the files in the cd are in it. Then I go to my desktop and try to access the game using the shortcut and the game starts up.

After all the starting movies are done, I try to start to play the game and an error message comes up saying "Insert the game CD-ROM in the drive".

I've done the same thing with other games and music CD's but nothing worked. (the music cd's only worked when I opened windows media player and opened them via that way)

I've restarted the computer twice already and nothing new has happened.

Any amount of help will be appriciated,

Thanks.

When you install a program, particularly a game which needs the CD to run, the game notes which drive it was installed from and expect the CD to be in the same drive when you play the game.

What appears to have happened in your case, is that the Drive Assignment changed. That's the letter asigned to the drive i.e., C:, D:, E:, F:, etc., and now the game is looking in the wrong place for the CD.

Try System Restore, to a time before this problem, that should sort it. If not, give us a few more details of your setup (drives, partitions, CDs, DVDs, etc).

Hi,

Well thing here is, that it does not happen only with a particular game. I used that as an example.

You know like when both your hard drives have no cd's in them and it is supposed to show "DVD Drive (E: )" and "CD-RW Drive (F: ) etc,. When I startup and have no cd's in them, they are normal. When I enter a cd in either drive (game, music, etc.), the drive does not change its name to that of the cd's and the icon doesn't change either.

For example,

Say I put on Eminem's album "Encore" in DVD-Drive E.

When I go to my computer, it does not say "Encore" at the drive which the cd was put in.

It just says "DVD-Drive E"

And strange thing is, like when I put a blank cd or a music cd on either drive, before a screen came up saying "open writable cd folder" or "Open this cd with <program>" now nothing happens when I enter a cd.

I am probably going to format the computer anyway cause been some time since I've last done that.

Thank you.

Shut down PC, then unplug the IDE cables one at a time, re-insert them. Same for power plugs. Boot up and try it.

If no help - try swapping IDE cables with other ones / new ones.
