Exclamation Problem Installing Windows XP over Win 95

Hey guys,
I have a problem installing Windows XP Pro over Windows 95. I launch the Windows setup executable and it opens fine (I am able to initialize the installation). Once the status bar indicates that all of the files were finished copying, an error messase pops-up, saying: "Setup was unable to read from or write to drive C. If a virus scanner is running, disable it then restart Setup." I do not have any Anti-Virus scanners or programs installed in my computer. I copied all of the files from the CD to the Hard Drive, but still no success. The PC is a Pentium 2 processor with a 3 gig Hard Drive, and 160 Megabyte SDR RAM.
Anny suggestions, advise, or help?
That would be appreciated.
Thank You.

I've always been against "upgrading" windows without reformatting. In my opinions you get lot less troubles reformatting then installing from scrap.

after making backups of your data first

Check here to see if your system is compatable, download the tool and check,
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p...g/advisor.mspx if everything is ok then do a clean install. Also look here to do clean install

Bad news guys ,
It seems that you can only upgrade to Windows XP when running on Windows 98 or higher, not Windows 95. The good news is that my pc is compatible with Win XP. What I still don't get is that I want to reinstall the whole thing from scratch, not upgrade it, it keep's poping-up with that error message. I forgot to mention that when I click on "Install Windows XP" a message comes up saying that I cannot upgrade it directly, but I can install it. Im confused... Is there a possible way to format your HD without having your computer's CDs?
thnx again!

Put the xp cd in the cd-rom, reboot, enter bios, (delete on most newer pc's), set the cd-rom to first boot in the bios, F10 to save and exit, watch for "boot from cd-rom" prompt, hit a key, follow the prompts, delete your old partition and create your new partition, install XP. (You will need a 98/ME/2000 disk for the XP install to verify your previous OS, the install will ask for it, 95 is not compatable) once XP is installed reboot, go back into the bios and set hdd as first boot. If the partition is undeleteable, (it might well be and as I have not tried to put XP over a 95 install before I have no first hand knowledge), you may need to format with a 98 boot floppy before proceeding with the XP install.

Make sure you have all the XP applicable drivers for your hardware.

I seriously doubt you will get acceptable performance with your pc specs, they must be right on the borderline to run XP. Try it though, it may work ok.

Good luck

Thanks a lot for the help,
You guys are awesome!
I will try that and let you know how I did. I have a Win XP retail and a Win 98 SE retail by the way, but the Win 98 SE tells me to format the HD first before installing it.

Okay with that disk ( xp retail ) you have the full package and need not to worry about those other windows , just use the xp disk , here below is a website that show you how its done

Though you might want to Slipstreaming your xp disk if it doesn't have service pack 2 , If it does ? Then you have it all and you are set to go , Here again is a website that show how its done
