windows xp freezes - help!

I've got a compaq presario with windows xp home. My computer has been freezing intermittently since shortly after I bought it in december. It has an AMD 3000+ sempron processor, 512 ram, and an 120g hard drive. I've uninstalled every program and done a clean install of windows and it didn't solve the problem; I'm pretty sure it's a hardware problem, but I don't really know enough about it to be sure. When it freezes it completely locks up and requires a hard restart; it sometimes does this 5 or 6 times in a row, freezing shortly after logon, until it finally decides to work. It's more likely to freeze if I'm running any internet application, and it always ALWAYS freezes if I try to upload anything to any website, whether through the website or dreamweaver. Sometimes, it freezes randomy when no programs are running. I've done virus scans religiously with every program under the sun, I defragment on a regular basis, and I clear out my temp files. I had some problems with my wireless card (a netgear WG311T) but after downloading a patch from netgear's website most of them have been resolved, but who knows, it might still be affecting the computer... I am also generally running Norton's antivirus and firewall, but freezing happens when they're disabled too. Any ideas? Help!

-Shane

Remove the cover from the machine and ensure the CPU and Graphic card fans are running.

I only see one fan, but it's running... sorry, I'm a beginner at this. I assume the large one I see is the cpu fan...

Just re-read your original posting, with the machine only about 6 months old it should still be covered by warranty.

Save all your valuable files and email addresses etc and then take it to be fixed under warranty.

There is heavily documented evidence on the Netgear Forums of this card causing systems with VIA chipsets to freeze. I have had this problem myself and had no option but to change the network card to a different one. Netgear have still to resolve this problen to-date, with even the latest drivers having no positive effect.

I would check your system to see if it employs a VIA chipset, if it does then you have no option but to try another brand of network card - borrow one first if you can just to make sure everything works fine.. then boot that Netgear card onto Ebay and try to claw some money back..

Good Luck.
