Dual Boot Win 98se and WinXP Home

I have win 98 se on C: drive and Win XP Home on the D: drive which is a different harddrive. I tried to install xp on the D: drive with the computer booted up in 98 but it started out ok then sometime during the install it went to the C: drive and overwrote the 98. I had to disconnect the 98 harddrive and install XP on the second harddrive as if it was the only one on the computer. Now I have both harddrives working with 98 on the C: drive and XP on the D: drive. My question is how do I make this a dual boot system?

I can unplug the C: drive from the puter and XP will boot great. If I plug it back in I just boot into 98.

I hope you understand everything I just said I am not sure if I do or not.

You started out with good intentions. If you had booted from the xp install cd (means changing your bios to boot from cdrom), you would have gotten choices of where to install XP and the dual boot system would have been done for you. Always install the older os first as the xp boots from that os. Now you will have to copy boot files to XP and run the fixboot command. Here is a good site for more info.

I did install 98 first on #1 harddrive then tried to install XP on #2 harddrive but somehow during the install it overwrote 98 on harddrive #1 So I formated harddrive #1 and reinstalled 98. I then unpluged HD#1 and installed XP on HD#2 so it wouldn't mess up 98 again. Both HDs are masters on different cables.I also have 2 CD ROMS and they are slaves. Both HDs are fat 32 also.
