Windows XP Install problem

I have a Compaq PC with Intel Pentium 4 processor and WIndows XP Home edition. I have been unable to get Windows update to work, it just hangs up while checking for updates. I then downloaded SP2 in the hope I could install it and it would fix the problem.

The install of SP2 failed with a message about "unable to verify Update.inf and make sure Cryptographic Service is turned on and running", which it was. I then renamed the catroot2 file and install seemed to work till after the Registry was copied. It aborted saying : "Unable to read from or write to database."

I finally got so frustrated I went out and bought a new copy of Windows XP Professional, an Upgrade version. 25% into the installation, i get messages saying " Unable to copy files (file name) from CD.When I open the browser, I can see the file in the I386 folder on the CD.

Does anyone have any idea of what could be wrong?

Thanks

that sounds like a memory issue,,,If I were you I would on the phone and contact Compaq (HP for all we know) and bitch till you get them to send you a copy of XP with SP2 or have the technical support send you to nearest service location to change the RAM, this does not seem like service pack 2 issue.

Cheers

Thanks for your suggestion, but I have 516MB of memory which should be enough to run XP. I finally managed to install XP Professional by doing a clean install rather than the upgrade. Now Windows update works fine.
