Can't switch off PC and other problems

For a week or so I've been having this problem. Once or twice a day
the appearance of my screen goes wrong - the top line of a window
which shows the minimize/restore/maximize icons disappears and bits of
my desktop background or minimized windows show through. When this
happens I have to restart the computer to fix it but it won't switch
off unless I use the on/off switch - clicking on Start and Switch off
Computer doesn't work. I can't restore as I've just got rid of Trojan
Horse Downloader Agent AS which I thought might be causing this
problem. I run AVG free, Adaware, Noadware, a2 Anti-Trojan and Spyware
Doctor all of which say I am clear. Could it still be a virus or any
other ideas what the problem could be please? Thanks.

If this is a software problem we need to rule out spyware/adware and viruses lisa

My advice is to follow these simple guides i made.
Removing viruses and trojans
Removing spyware

If these guides do not work, i recommend following the Hijack This instructions in the 'Removing Viruses and Trojans guide.

Also....Try running sfc /scannow (note the space after sfc) from the 'Run' box. This will replace any damaged or missing files you may have. You may be prompted to insert your XP disk.

If all the above do not work, the problem may be hardware related
