Question strange connection problems on domain from one client...

Here at work we're on a domain with approximately 50 users. Everybody is using DHCP.

There is just 1 single guy that seems to have issues with connection. He says that almost every single morning when he first comes in and logs on his system does not connect to the network. Upon unplugging the ethernet and plugging it back in it will work, however, it may lose connection once or twice throughout the day.

A number of different ethernet cables haven't worked and the port in the system seems to be just fine.

I tried to give him a static IP and see if maybe the DHCP was dropping him for some reason. He says that with static it always connects in the morning when he first logs on...but throughout the day he's still losing connection at random times. Yesterday he lost connection and unplugging/plugging back in wasn't working. I switched it back to DHCP and we got a connection again.

Any information as to why he might be losing his connection would be greatly appreciated. Again, he's the only one who seems to have this trouble.

Thanks!

Drew

Drew,

If you've already put a cable tester on the line to make sure the actual cable run back to the switch is good, and you've tried a different switch port then it sounds like you need a new NIC ... I presume its a newer workstation with an integrated NIC. A Dell Dimension or other home grade workstation I presume?

Try getting a hold of a PCI NIC, disabling the intergrated NIC in BIOS and then install the PCI NIC and see what happens (don't forget to download the new NIC drivers before you disable the flakey NIC). If you can find a 3COM 3C905B NIC somewhere they'll come cheap and are serious workhorses.
