hey, I guess this is to bookworm, because you seem to know most about multimedia audio controller. I have kind of the same problem as Bonham983 above me. Everytime I turn on my computer, it tries to install multimedia audio controller, but it says it can't find the necessary information to install it.

Operating system

Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)

System model

Acer Aspire T160 R02-A3
System Serial Number: PTS4805003624070782706

I have absolutely no idea about where to start about downloading anything to install. I really hope you can help me, and if you need aome other information about my computer let me know.

I downloaded belarc and here is my info:

Operating System

Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)

System Model

Gateway E-6000 4000782
System Serial Number: 0028455806
Chassis Serial Number: 0028455806
Enclosure Type: Desktop

Processor

I tried going to Gateway and downloading their sound driver in the "My Sound Downloads" area, a program called 7513081.exe - Sound Blaster Audigy driver, vers. 5.12.4.252, but it didnt seem to work. Do I need to do some installing/uninstalling before trying to run this program? Or am I in the wrong area. Thx in advance for any help.

You need to point Windows to the driver to install.

This is how Gateway install the driver

Installation

Download the file to the desktop, and then perform the following steps.

1. On your screen, double-click the 7513081.exe file.

2. The Win-Zip Self-Extractor window opens and unzips the files to the C:\Cabs\7513081 folder.

3. Close all open programs.

4. From the Start menu, click Run. In the Run dialog box, type: C:\Cabs\7513081\Audigy.exe. Click OK.

5. In the Gateway Installer dialog box, click Begin to start the installation.

6. The installation may prompt you for the Windows CD, if so, place the CD in the drive, and then click OK.

7. When prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

Any problems just post back

Hello again,
I had previously run through that installation outline when I originally downloaded the program, it did not work. So I tried it again after you instructed, still the same result. When my computer restarted, the "Found New Hardware Wizard" prompted me to install software for the Multimedia Audio Controller again, this time I went to "install from a list or specific location" and included the following location (C:\cabs\7513081\AUDIO\Drivers\WIN2K_XP) as the \WIN2K_XP folder was the only one in the directory that was allowed. The Wizard then said the hardware was not installed due to being unable to find the necessary software. I'm stumped, any clues?

That is a Soundblaster sound card, your audio plugs should be in an expansion slot on the tower. The motherboard has onboard sound so a set of audio plugs will be on the I/O plate. Which set of audio plugs are you using see here http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0io%20slot.JPG

I'm not entirely sure how to respond, but when I look at the Expansion slot, i find a plate labelled Soundblaster Audigy, with 5 colored circular plugs and 1 cable slot.

Do you plug your speakers into the Soundblaster audio, or have been using the audio plugs on the I/O plate ( near top of tower, where keyboard and mouse sockets are ) I think Windows is trying to load the onboard audio drivers.

I do plug my speakers into the Soundblaster audio. The 5 holes are color coded, two of the colors correspond to the colors of the plugs from my sub, which has ports on it which my two speakers plug in to.

Just a bit of follow-up... I went to the Creative Product website to gain more information on the Soundblaster Audigy card, hopefully obtain some drivers from them directly. They had driver downloads available, but when I went to install them, the install wizard said that no supported product could be located on my computer. How is that possible? I can physically see the soundcard installed in my computer tower. I'm at a loss, any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It depends which Audigy card you have, Gateway don't give the model, can you look at the card and see what if any numbers you can see on it.
