need the make and model of comp, or the motherboard, if not sure Get Belarc, copy and paste the report, omit the Software section, it gives Product Codes for your OS and the Windows Critical Updates.

I am also suffering from the dreaded "Multimedia Audio Controller" problem.

I have sound, but I am really getting tired of Windows telling me I have installed new hardware, then not being able to find it.

The only thing I have done with my system with regards to hardware is install a second DVD drive onto my computer, it is working fine. After that I installed ROXIO Media v9, the uninstalled it. This appears to be when problem originated. (There were system crashes, which stopped after removing ROXIO.) With only 512MB Ram, I do have issues with running out of memory when playing with graphics programs.

I tried installing drivers recommended by driver update software.(Recommended Realtek drivers). Current and older drivers only result in the "Blue Screen of Death."

I have gone to my computer manufacturers site to see if they had drivers, no luck.

I have gone into the control panel and verified everything is pointing to my Soundcard. My Speakers work great.

I only have one set of sound plugs on the back of my machine.

I wouldn't bother trying to fix, since I have sound, but I am now having problems installing Windows updates because of this Hardware issue.

Here is the info from Belarc:

Are your audio plugs on the I/O plate or in a expansion slot, see here, click image to
focus
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0io%20slot.JPG

looks like you have a sound card installed, you should have 2 sets of audio sockets, your Intel board has onboard sound, it's Soundmax, check near the bottom of the tower for another set of audio sockets.
have you removed a sound card from your system.

do you get an error message when you try to install updates?

Apologies for posting useless info, just put it all in in case u needed it.

I have previously tried sis7012 drivers (which installed but continued to say there was a problem with my deivce), Realtek AC'97 drivers (which made my pc crash when I tried to install them).

NEC Computers don't have my computer and the packard bell website was just as useless and fruitless.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thankx in advance

Your help was greatly appreciated. Although while I installed the driver and all is well in deice drivers, I still have so sound. I tried to play a .wav file of windows startup and got this message:

Windows cannot play the sound %SystemRoot%\media\Windows XP Startup.wav. Your soundcard may be in use

Any suggestions?

Thanks again.
