found the drivers at Sony go here http://support.vaio.sony.eu/computin..._GB&m=PCV-V1_G
it's a large download of Original Driver Package - down load - unzip and drivers are all in separate folders
found by using the serial numbers at Sony Europe 28070050-5004013
Set a System Restore Point before installing driver just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

just had a look it's soundmax, picky devil, try installing this way, use the If No Setup File method.
you will need to browse to where the audio folder is
If no Setup file
1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.
don't forget the Restore Point

tried that before aswell, i don't have anything flagged at all in my device manager other than 3 unknown devices, all my sound and video is fine, when i try to update the "legact audio drivers" it tells me that it couldn't find a better match than the software i already have installed. this is confusing me!

did it report on what SiS chipset you have installed
check this
Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot

SiS have a habit of disabling the onboard sound in the BIOS, but need the board so I can check the manual, are you comfortable with popping the side off the comp and looking at the board, make and model will be shown, look at this Abit board, it will be similar

just post what it shows
