How do I add Ethernet connected Printer?

My system config:
New Dimension 8400
Bios: Dell A05
Windows XP Pro, Ver 5.1.2600, Service Pack 2.0
Pentium 4, 3.0 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB HD

I have an HP color Laserjet 4500N postscript printer connected by a crossover ethernet cable. Usually its plugged into a MAC and works fine.

I plugged the cable into my PC:
when the printer is powered off Windows thinks that the network cable is unplugged. When I power up printer the status is first given as acquiring network address. It then says "Limited or no connectivity" and since its just a printer I guess "limited" makes sense.
I downloaded driver from HP for XP which went into a folder and unzipped itself. However, no Wizard appeared.
I then went to control panel and tried to "add a printer" with local option auto detect (plug'n'play) approach, but it couldn't find printer and the only manual options available were for LPT1, etc. The wizard had said that for a printer on a net that was NOT attached to a computer one should use to local option. If I try via the printer networked via another computer this seems to be incorrect as one would expect.

What do I do to make system see my printer and to install driver?

thanks

Unhappy Able to install driver but can't print -- MAC problem?

Found a note at MS telling me how to install driver; installed umpty-ump versions of driver from HP for printer at its IP address. None of them can print a test page. Noticed on printout of printer's EIO 1 Configuration page the line: "APPLETALK STATUS: READY". I'm beginning to suspect that this is the problem now. Printer is configured to talk to MAC but not to PC. Maybe I have to install network hub at MAC and print through network via the MAC. Darn! I was hoping not to involve the MAC since its not used very often and has 2 versions of OS9 on it. What I wanted to do was just switch the printer's ethernet cable connection when needed.
Any thoughts?
TIA,
cpu

Issue Resolved

Solution was to change PC's IP address, gateway, and mask to be compatible with that of printer

ISSUE RESOLVED thanks to Felix at AppleTalk

Happy your problem is solved; however, I simply do not understand why HP did not provide software and/or directions on how to use the this printer with a PC if it was designed for such use. EVERY printer I have ever used or owned requires specific software somewhere.
