My Windows XP is broken - black screen on startup after repair.

Please can someone help me with this. Windows was not booting up so I tried a repair. This worked at first but when it got to the setup screen on reboot the mouse and keyboard would not respond so I could not enter my key. Then I used BartPE to salvage my documents and settings and tried to repair again. Then on reboot it just showed a black screen with a large mouse pointer and I have to manually restart. The same thing happens with all boot options except safe mode when the writing is displayed around the edges, but still same problem. I installed Windows again in c:\windows2 and want to know if there is any way to repair my first windows install. I have full backups of registry from before the problem happened so that can be wiped if need be. I am running Windows XP Home Edition on a Intel Celeron 733Mhz with NVIDIA Geforce FX 5200. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
