Problem with embedded links in certain programs, and links in MSN Messenger

I think this problem started when I installed Windows XP Service Pack 2. Whenever I try to click on a link in an MSN Messenger conversation window, no action takes place. The browser is expected to open and launch the URL, but it does not. I get the same result when I try to click on a link embedded in say a software installation window.

Taking another example, if I install a software, and it requires me to register by clicking a button or a link that is supposed to launch the browser and take me to a certain URL, nothing happens when I click that button/link.

To make matters worse, some software does function correctly, and some doesn't. For example, links in Yahoo Messenger conversation windows open satisfactorily, while links in MSN Messenger do not. Embedded links in Zonealarm work fine, but in Winamp they do not.

Could someone please help out?

System Configuration:
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
1.66 GHz, 224 MB RAM

Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2
