Local area connection question

There goes, both my computers are connected via an Ethernet cable without a hub. I can see and ping each computer, but only the main desktop has internet connection. And even though set as shared, the laptop can't see the connection How is this possible? How can I be on the local area network, and yet not be able to see the internet from one machine?

this might help....

if you are using xp, goto programs, accessories, communications, network setup wizard. run the wizard on the laptop.

I did that, no the problem was actually that i use a standard Ethernet cable, and not a UTP X Crossover cable ooops
