Desperate help needed with my Laptop

Hi everyone,

I recently got given a laptop for university but there's nothing on it apart from the OS and the basic programs that come with it. I need to connect it to the Internet so I can download programmes and files so that it's ready for September but I don't seem to be able to get it to work.

My desktop PC, as well as my brother's, are both connected to the internet via a D-Link DSL-504 Router, however when I plug cable into my laptop, even with the Windows XP Network Connection wizard I can't connect to the Internet or Desktop PCs.

Can someone please tell me how I can get my laptop connected to the Internet using the router?

The laptop uses Windows XP Home Edition SP 1, and is:

Toshiba Personal Computer Mobile Intel
Celeron CPU

Please - this is urgent.

First off, does your laptop connect to the internet without the router? If so, try hooking it up to the router again ... reboot the router - sometimes pulling the power connector works or you can push in the reset button with a paper clip. It should work. Get back to us.

Naw, I tried connecting without the router but to no avail. I tried connecting the router then turning off and turning on the laptop again but that didn't help either... Anything else I could try?

Make sure you ethernet hardware is enabled and drivers installed. You can check that in device manager.

I think it might be that the TCP/IP client, protocol etc. isn't installed on my laptop's network connections. Could this be why? I tried installing, but the drivers could not be found. Anywhere I can download the drivers to copy onto disc and then install on the laptop? Thanks for your help
