Windows missing file

Error message with white writing on black screen on boot-up

"Windows could not start becasue the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."

If what the message is saying by setup cd-rom as the XP disc, the one I have(not the one originally installed on my laptop) just sits at the "setup is inspecting hardware...."

I have tried a lot of things, but i'm stuck

hmmmm.... try booting from the XP CD that u have, then goto the recovery console then goto the Windows XP partition. Then type in CHKDSK. If that doesnt work, boot from the cd press enter, then F8 at the EULA screen. It should detect that u have a Windows XP file system on ur drive and ask if u wanna repair it. If that doesnt work, then sry im out of ideas.
