Changing sounds and minimization

These two things have been really annoying me recently and I can't figure out how to stop them. The first one is that I want to be able to change the volume of my audio (.wav) files so that when any program uses them (not just iTunes,) they volume is louder or softer depending on what I want. For example, the AIM sounds when you send or receive a message are too loud. I don't want to turn my volume down on my speaker because I have other stuff running (like Itunes and a game.) I tried changing the volume by opening the file in iTunes and then changing the volume by right-clicking on it and moving the slider, but that only affects the file when iTunes plays it.

My other annoyance is that sometimes when I am playing games, I get a message on AIM and my game minimizes and since my computer is slow, it can take a while for the game to restore, and in multiplayer games (like Guild Wars,) the game doesn't pause of course and a lot can happen in while I'm disbaled. I was wondering if there is a way to prevent full screen applications (in which you cannot see the toolbar when they're open) from minimizing when another application does something. Preferably, it would only minimize when I hit alt+tab.
