Printer issues with WinXp

Current set up is a single thermal printer IBM 4610 set up for a Point of sale system.
Want to use printer for other applications.
Set up a IBM driver in Windows to allow this. Printing is fine.
Hoever, when printing withing Point of sale systems, errors are generated due to Windows constantly sending messages to the printer to see if it is still connected. Is there a way to stop Windows from checking this? We have tried to set the printer to Offline but that doesn't stop windows from checking if the printer is connected or not.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
