What u asking for should work, only in the case of one user account on xp and the welcome screen is checked in control panel (classic view)/users accounts/ change the way users log on or off. If your account is the only one on xp, then what u get is not a welcome screen, it is a username and password window prompt like in win2k and winnt.
Possibility:
You may have Gina enabled, strange to me though, since I’m aware of Gina comes with xp home not pro.
Solution:
Under windows folder search inside system32 folder for file named Gina, if you have it, search box must find a file named something like gina86 or ginax86 or equivalent. Delete this file, you will be prompt with something like this: (deleting Gina will result in a change of security log on settings, once deleted it will not be restored, are you sure?)
When you click yes, you will be notified: changes will take effect on next system restart.
Ps.
1. Make sure that u have only one user account before doing the Gina thing; other wise u would not need do it
1. In search option let check search system / hidden files or folders
2. Deleting this file does not do any harm to your system.
Hope this help u
Good day!
