File > Open > Can't auto arrange by name!

Hi, this has been pickling my brain for a week now. I have searched for a sollution but nothing has come up. Icons are automatically arranged by name when I am browsing through folders and the arrangement can be changed and stay changed. It is when I have a program editplus/notepad/media player/ .... that I can't change it to auto arrange by name, I can change it but when I open a file and try to open another it is back to being arranged by date or modified(not sure). The show in groups/auto arrange/align to grid are all blanked out, i.e they can't be selected. Any help would be so appreciated.
