delay accessing files in explorer

Hello,

I'm running Windows XP pro SP1. Since the beginning (even in safe mode), I have a very annoying problem. I get long delays (5, sometimes 10 seconds) when accessing any files in explorer: accessing means double clicking (computer has no activity - even cpu - while I see an hour glass, then the associated program finally pops) or even copying or cutting "files" (sometimes, for a single selected file, it doesnt happen, but most of the time, it will): there will be a delay before the file is actually selected for pasting.

This is a huge problem for day to day management of files...

I have looked at

http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com...explorer+delay

but it didnt solve my problem.

If I use a command prompt and use, for example, "start <some file>"
instead of double clicking, it will work fine, no delays!

Also, there is no delays accessing any files via the network from a win9x or win2k computer!

Thanks for any help!

right back to the basics first - the mouse.

Have you checked the properties on the mouse .eg click speed, double click options etc..?

The mouse can't be the problem since I often use the keyboard too to navigate, like I said, for example, with CTRL-C and CTRL-V to copy and paste files accross directories.

[return] would produce the same delay in launching a program for a file.

The problem appears on file access but can't be HW since in a cmd prompt, everything will go fine.

Thank you for reading and the suggestion anyways,
Regards.

Do you have a restore point from before this started happening? if so use it.
