can you get into safe mode if you can then it looks like a complete re install.
OK INSERT WINDOWS XP disk in top corner you should see install with floppy, change this to whatever drive you are using . if you cant then insert disk in driver and force it to start up , one way is to switch machine off and as it starts up it should boot from there and then carry on installing.

I can get into safe mode, and a complete reinstall is ok but I cant get the disk to boot at all. Not sure what you meant by "OK INSERT WINDOWS XP disk in top corner you should see install with floppy, change this to whatever drive you are using..... " this is after the disk boots up?

Any other way of getting the xp disk to start up? thanks again

insert disk into cd drive shut down and restart with cd still in drive it should start installing windows also need to make in start up your cd to be first start up this you can get to to change by pressing F2 if you have not allready done this. it should by rights start this way or you have a faulty disk because at mo there is 5 of you on line different forums all with same problem. where do you reside uk or usa, right make sure that your cd drive is the first one you see then it can be harddrive, then floppy then whatever you want.
so it is start up press f2 scroll down to BIOS and then alter order that it boots up in
