stumped.. xp boot problem

Hey guys,
im brand now here and im really not bad at all with computers. The computer starts up the dell thing comes up and after that the windows loading screen would come up but it doesnt start windows i get this screen

"we are sorry for any inconvenience but windows did not start successfully this may be due to a recent hardware or software change

If your computer stopped responding or restarted unexpectedly or was shot off to protect your files and folders chose 'Last known good configuratiion'
If startup was interupted due to a power failure or you dont know start windows up in normal mode"

the options i have to start are safe, safe with networking, safe with command prompt or Last known good configuration.

I have tried a lot of things. i tried in safe and it looked like it started up. there was the arrow for the mouse and it was able to move, and it said safe mode in all the corners but a few seconds later it said it couldnt start because of an error in comct32.dll

Now i was like no big deal ill put it as slave in my computer. the harddrive wasnt detected. i have an sata in my computer and this was ide i plugged it into the mobo on slave but it didnt work. so i took another hd running xp pro sp2 from another computer. plugged it into the original and put the original hd on slave. that didnt work either the same thing happened.

so i thought to take out the original hard drive. This is where this gets real weird. after i took it out the computer still got the same exact message. on a different perfectly fine working hard drive. then i tried to start in safe mode with the good working hd, and it started to load safe mode and didnt even load up all the way. on the bottom of the screen it said "loading d347bus.sys" then it reboots.

This makes me think that it is a hardware or software problem.. but everything seems to be working fine, the comptuer starts theres picture. the only thing that i can say about maybe a change would be that: the persons who's computer this is said that they clicked a windows update message that said they needed to restart their computer now. this is when this started to happen.

I am stumped and cant reformat or reinstall xp. Please guys any help would be great.

Thanks in advance
Mike

why cant you formatt or do a reinstall? have you gone into your BIOS and changed the order of boot so that cd drive come first, then hard drive, then floopy try that should work worked with 3 other members last night.

when asked what you want to do, it should give you 3 options, the first one you want to try is Repair. if that does not work then, it will probably end up with you doing a complete re install.
As i say try other options first.

THE Disk should find files and repair them itself, also i believe they are the same, i press f2 to get into the bios

I get to the recovery console and it starts setting up i press 1 to choose the only windows that is on the computer it then prompts me for the administrator password. the people dont remember setting one. is there a default password. or what do i do if there is no password. i tried just pressing enter to go by it and i tried "password" neither worked. i tried a lot of passwords that the people might have used. also is there maybe a crack or way of getting around this?

with xp pro you have to create a password in the administator account that is what that error means you should be able to make up a password, but when you remember it because you have to use it all the time to get into the administractors account once in ther click on other users and create another account this time without a password, this is what you use. please keep us posted.

MORE INFO
the owner account was created by windows because when xp pro was installed no user account was set up..

go to conbtrol panel click and bring up user accounts then in there you will find where you can change account details that is the one you want to change.

GLAD I COULD HELP YOU.

This computer is running xp home with no service pack (the owners have dial-up).. i cant get into windows normal or safe mode because of the comct32.dll. also there is an account its name is "The Herman Family" and the comptuer would automatically log in when the computer was started up. which is why i think that no password was set on the account. anything else i can try? and don i appreciate that you keep helping me.

right ok here we go by the way I love helping people with computers, you see I build my own,if you go into user account and click onto or it might come up, for you to change the name aply ok and you should find then you have the new name up.
Also cmos is memory that helps the bios, you see the little battery on the motherboard, if you take that out for 2-3 hours and then put it back in. it will wipe everything in the memory it is another way of being able to do a complete reinstall, which would not hurt in your case. also can you borrow off any a windows xp sp2 disk service pack, because as long as the xp disk you have already is genuine, then you can install the service pack as well it will sort out a lot of your problems.

HEAR FROM YOU SOON.
