Linking Canon MV850i Camcorder to an Acer Travelmate 4050 laptop

Hi

I just bought a new canon camcorder model MV850i and am trying to download movies from the camcorder to my laptop (Acer Travelmate 4050) using the DV connection. I have linked the IEEE 1394 cable but the laptop just does not seem to register the camcorder. I have checked the setting of the VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller and it says it working fine under device manager. The canon support says I have to update my driver for the firewire but there is no upgrade at the Acer site and since the laptop is only a few months old I don't think they will be a new update. I am using XP pro.

Can anyone help?

PS: when I switch the camcorder to card reader mode as oppose to tape mode and link via USB the laptop recognises it but this is only for images and is of no help in terms of downloading the video clips from the Mini DV tapes.

Please help as I just got a baby girl and am trying to download her pics to make a movie clip to send to her grandparents

Thanks

The CD as far as I can tell has the various Digital Video Software, ie ZoomBrowser, PhotoRecord, PhotoStitch, DV TWAIN Driver and DV WIA Driver.

I have installed all of them as there is a standard install for all, it also has quicktime. Since it was not working I have un-installed them all and am trying to connect to windows movie maker but no luck!

same problem with mv750i model

I noticed when installing the software that no drivers where installed.
so i looked through the cd came with the camera that there where not any USB drivers at all inside. there where some dv drivers that when i tried to install, a message poped up saying "no windows XP driver found", or something like this.
By searching the internet i realized that there were no drivers all over the web for my model compatible with windows XP.
Canon stopped with making drivers when windows XP where realized?
