avi not working in PowerPoint 2003 on XP

I have inserted an avi file into PowerPoint 2003. The avi appears black. It is running because the slide transitions to the next page after the avi has stopped...but the avi itself is black...not showing the animation!
This only happens in PowerPoint 2003 and not previous versions!

Strangely, the avi will play if it is opened on Windows Media Player on the same computer???



Any ideas?

Try converting the .avi to .wmf or .mpg I had the same problem and found that not all codecs are available in powerpoint.
