CAN USBs BE REINSTALLED FROM DISC OR DOWNLOAD?

Can I simply replace the USBs, which have disappeared from my Device Manager, by reinstalling from a disk or download or is it a matter for a technician?

if you have windows xp shut down your computer, take the side off the tower undo the retaning screw, pull out the usb unit reinstall it doing the reverse of taking it out, before you do all of this make sure your computer is unplugged from the mains. restart windows and you will probably find they have reappeared if they have not then we need more info on what you where doing when they disappearred.

SEE OTHER POST USB DISAPPEAR ON THIS SITE, IF THE ABOVE DOES NOT WORK

Thanks for the reply thedon57. Unfortunately the computer is a laptop so accessing the inside is difficult. The circumstances of the disappearance are as follows: I used my external hard-drive the previous evening but forgot to do the "safely unplug" routine. In the morning I disconnected the ext hard-drive before booting-up as I have found that the laptop will not boot-up with the ext hard drive connected. I got a "Emos bad@ message on the screen before the computer booted-up apparently normally. When trying to run my music software and midi control surface I found it would not work. Checking the Device Manager I found that the USB branch on the tree had entirely disappeared. System restore has had no effect. I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

if it's not showing up at all in the device manager, maybe you could go in the control panel and click "add new hardware" and get it to probe for new devices just to see if it can find it. that's what i would try.

if you have a disk then run and it should ask you do you wantr to do a complete reinstall or a repair, press r and enter, and you should find that that will do it if not then you will have to do a complete reinstall.
keep us posted.
