I tried just about all of the above and realised it was messanger not starting up correctly. did a detect and repair on my outlook and shazam!!!! Problem sorted!!!!! Hope this wasn't just luck or coincidence as it seems a common problem. Good luck.

I had this kwbot c virus, and followed all the steps to remove it,
but I think it did something because I have similar problems to these earlier chaps. I can run fine in safe mode, but when I log in normally it takes about 1 minute for the computer to become unresponsive, even control alt delete won't work. I disabled messenger and that ssdp program as suggested, but still no luck.
In safe mode I've scanned everything with 3 different virus scanners and found nothing, but in normal mode my computer doesn't work long enough to even find out what's eating all my memory. You guys are batting 2 for 2 so far see if you can get 3.

Apparently this is a fault with an automatic messanger update. Hence so many sufferers at once.
A bug in the software.
If you use control panel to remove messanger add ons then you will be OK, until MSN fix the prob and send out the new auto update.
You can still use messanger but dont get direct access to email and stuff. they should have the solution soon.

My problem is the same, svchost use 100%. my problem is a "service" called <Dnscache>
tasklist /svc says:
svchost.exe pid:1048 Dnscache
There is no problem with svchost.exe containing audiosrv, browser ect. (use 17 230kb mem when i've disabled uphp printer scanner thing, enabled it used ca20mb)
So where can i disable dnscache????

You might try going to the 'Run' dialog and typing 'services.msc'. Go through the list (or leave it running in the background) and see if, when everything freezes, if there's a service that is 'starting'. Chances are when it's freezing a service is trying to start again (it's not getting started successfully at any time which is why your resources are pegging and everything freezes). If you find one, that's doing that, try changing it to 'Manual' or 'Disable' by right-clicking. That should help clear up the freezing.
I'm running Windows XP Pro, so I don't know if it will have the same effect on Home, but it's worth a shot, right?

SVChost cpu hog and Microtek
This thread really saved my bacon from a complete reload, thanks. Although my problem turned out to be "Microtek Scanner Finder" that loads into the systray at startup. I removed it from the start up folder and now my computer runs like I just did a fresh install of XPpro. My USB 2.0 Microtek 5900 scanner works better without the scanner finder, I don't know or care why, it just does. Running through the trouble shooting tips in this thread made it possible, Thanks again and good luck to all on resolving your SVChost problems.

solution svchost.exe problem
hi,
It is a bug between win 2k sp 3 and mc affee virusscan home edition. You should use the enterprise edition. The problem is solved when you uninstall the virusscan.

Remote IP
Hello all. Thanks for the great info. Here's my situation...
From what I've read, svchost.exe is a generic host
process name for services that are run from dynamic-link libraries (DLLs). http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=250320
I have "Norton Internet Security" [NIS] running (a GREAT tool, by the way ... even has advertisement blocking). It prompted me with an alert about svchost.exe trying to make inbound contact. It listed the Remote IP address as 210.5.22.23 I used NeoTrace (another great tool that graphically maps a traceroute on a globe) and it was to Beijing. Here's the who-is:
Quote:
Administrative Contact, Technical Contact:
DATA COMMUNICATION BUREAU (35347100O) lsy@PUBLICF.BTA.NET.CN
A12,Xin-Jie-Kou-Wai-Da-Jie
Beijing, Beijing 100088
CN

What the #@$* ?? I've since instructed NIS to disalllow all svchost attempts of this type.
Any idea on what this is?

SVCHOST.EXE at 100% CPU Usage
Using Windows Task Manager (Advanced) in WinXP showed under "Services" that SVCHOST.EXE was using from 99% to 100% of the CPU. Google lead me here and I tried the Task Manager under "Processes" tab. Taking a chance I changed the SVCHOST.EXE to "End Process" by right clicking on it. Apparently something cause it to hang up and grab ahold of the CPU processing and not let go. My system slowed to a crawl for weeks.
The "End Process" will not harm anything and, in effect, release the hold of SVCHOST.EXE on the CPU. What a difference! I'm back up to SPEED!!!!

Windows Messenger Never Again
If you don't use Windows messenger and you think that is what is causing your svchost problem you can do one of two things.
1. Close windows messenger and go in your program files folder and rename the folder named Messenger to Messenger Backup
OR
2. Just delete the Messenger folder if you are sure you are never going to use it.
This may or may not solve your problem but everytime you load outlook windows messenger loads again. This solution never lets messenger load again until you rename the folder Messenger. This also lets you save memory.

seeing as how its such a common process its hard to guess without shutting it off
i have noticed a wierd quirk with some firewalls and scvhost.exe .
if your familiar with windows xp thumbnail previews, it will preview pics and html files with a small thumbnail in your browser.
now lets say you had an html file with an image hotlinked to an off-computer image or file or maybe just a shortcut or favourite html shortcut it will actually go and get the info for the html file to display the thumbnail preview.
Now i have noticed that this doesnt usually cause the firewall to give any message because its technically explorer that is already allowed, but... when you use a third party program like photoshop or adobe and go to insert images into the program it will open the explorer interface to let you "open" a file, now in this thumbnail preview it will cause the scvhost.exe to throw a warning to your firewall that it is connecting to the internet to get an image that is in a html file that its trying to show a preview thumbnail for..
ok im sure that made no sense but... lol
my basic theory with computers is ... close everything thats important when u have a problem backup your hard drive to disk.
then start closing stuff u dont like until things stop working , then u write down the name of what u turned off then u make a list and

SSDP problems
Hi all,
Just to say that I discovered that my pc was running rather sluggish. After calling up task manager i noticed one of the SVChost.exe's was using up 30% to 40% of CPU. strange!
After sliding over to your forum I discovered your excellent find that the SSDP discovery service was trying to start itself over and over, and getting nowhere! So, I promptly disabled the startup of this service and BANG nor more CPU usage! Great stuff!
1, how the hell did you discover this was the cause?
2, why was it not able to start?
3, is there any negative effects with disabling it?
Thanks again for the great find!
