Desktop Shortcut path variable ?

Thanks for your time. I need to use a variable in a couple of desktop shortcut icons' properties paths. The shorcuts point to a specific network Snap server directory depending on the location of the workstation.

I tried setting a system variable "FTRSVR"=%FTRLocal% and a user variable "FTRLocal"=MaconB for example. I need to be able to run a reg hack on the computer to change certain locational parameters and this is one of the last items on the list. When I enter a target path that includes \ftr\%FTRLocal%\, I ge a problem with shortcut message that the path name is not valid.

Does anyone know a way to do this?

Thanks,
