Product Key Annoyance

My folks currently have a version of Windows XP Home Edition installed on their computer without a product key and they've run out of activation time. I'm trying to figure out the cheapest way for them to solve this problem. Would it be possible to buy the windows xp he upgrade and reinstall windows with that?
Alternatively, I suppose they could just buy another license by providing microsoft with the product ID I'm using on this computer with home edition?
