Black Screen On Re-boot Sometimes!

Hello there,

Here goes then.

I have XP Pro SP2 installed on my machine and have had for sometime.

I don't remember changing any hardware or software configurations.

Now everytime I restart my PC, 'sometimes', like 1 out of 3 times, my PC will show the initial 'COMPAQ' logo, then, just before the 'WINDOWS' part comes up, the screen just stays BLACK, and appears to freeze.

I have to turn off and restart PC, then next time it may do it again. Finally after a series of 'turning off, turning on machine', it will give me a list of options.

• Start with last known GOOD config.
or
• Start Windows as normal.

I have to choose the GOOD CONFIG option as if I choose the bottom option, it just freezes again.

If this is related, when I shut down my PC, it sometimes, after the 'SAVING SETTINGS' box, just hang on a BLUE screen.

No error messages, no noises, it just freezes on a blue screen. I then have to manually hit the OFF button to turn it off.

I have NO Anti-virus or firewalls installed as I thought that might be the issue. Still no joy.

I have the initial XP CD disk, but was wondering if it has a recovery option?

By that I mean, can i restore just the start-up, shut down files to my WINDOWS directory instead of a whole UPGRADE or FRESH INSTALL?

Please help.

MX

Hello MXMaster,

You might want to try and jumping the CMOS. On your motherboard, just look for a set of three pins and move the jumper onto the other two pins - the opposite two - boot up the computer, shut it back down, put the jumper back into the original place, and boot it up like normal.

You might also want to go into the BIOS and "Restore Factory Defaults..." somewhere in there. (You might have to look, I'm not sure what type of computer you have)

Hope this has helped!

Thanks for replying.

I have already tried the BIOS option.

Its weird, everytime i restart PC it always gives me the option of:

• Win Xp Pro
• Win Xp Pro Recovery

Please choose one of the following option.

If i choose the top one, it gives me a choice of:

• Start XP as normal
• Last good configuration
• De-bugging mode
• Safe Mode
• Safe mode with networking.

If i choose one, it will just hang on a black screen, sometimes i can see the 'windows' logon image very faintly, like its about to come on the screen then froze.

I'll restart, try agin... then it will freeze.

then...I'll restart, try again..and it will work as normal?

I'm going to try a UPGRADE to XP Pro SP2 from my current version.

Any more thoughts?

You use Roxio?

Your settings are not saved, thus the configuration stays the same and you get the "last known good" each time. You are going in circles.
