XP upgrade from Windows 98

I've recently been unable to reboot XP Home, which is an upgrade to Windows 98.

After struggling to find a way to boot from the XP cd upgrade disk I found I had to reboot from the Windows 98 floopy boot disk and not the XP upgrade cd. This at least gives me the 98 dos prompt but no sign of XP now.

How do I recover XP from this scenario? Do I have to reinstall 98 and then reinstall the XP upgrade on top again?

Does anyone know how the relationship between 98 and XP upgrade works in this respect?

Can't I recover XP directly without starting from scratch with 98?

many thanks.

Don.

Reinstall XP from DOS Mode

You should be able to put in your xp cd and reinstall from dos as follows.

1. Boot from 98 CD or floppy disk.
2. Put XP upgrade cd into drive.
3. Type d:, hit enter. (d is the letter of your cdrom drive)
4. Type cd i386 and hit enter.
5. Type winnt.exe and hit enter.

XP setup should start, go through like you are going to install as you did the first time and it should ask if you want to repair your existing installation.

Delete all existing partitions and perform a 'clean installation' of XP, as per the following link, using your W98 CD as a qualifying disk. If in doubt, print it out: -

Clean Install Windows XP
