Go here to ASUS site http://support.asus.com.cn/download/...Language=en-us

In Select Product> from the dropdown list choose Motherboard

In Accessory > from dropdown list choose Socket 478

In last box > from dropdown list choose P4B266-M

click Search >

Select Drivers Tab > yours is the second on list it is a SoundMax Intergrated Digital Audio Driver > download and save to disc > choose somewhere you can rember . My Documents is good

Create a SYSTEM RESTORE point just in case.

Then double click downloaded file to install

Hope this helps

ok, first of all, Runescape has absolutely nothing to do with your sound. My brothers play it all of the time. And I am sure that no spyware/adware comes from playing the game. I haven't had a single thing from the game, and all I have it Ad-aware. It might not even be a problem, it might just be the speakers. Make sure that all cords are connected into the computer and speakers. If this still does not fix this, try a pare of Headphones/Earbudes. If these work, then it is a problem with the speakers.

You're right.. runescape has nothing to do with the problem with my sounds. My brother has been playing for years and up until a month or so ago there was no problem. I was just mentioning that the sound works with runescape and only I believe it is midi sound files and with the sound that the computer makes when it is shut down or booted up. And since it works for somethings and not others... I am thinking it probably isnt the speakers so that is why I posted here... I have absolutely no idea what the problem is thanks for the tip tho!

Try installing a new version of Direct x from Microsoft's website.
And, just in case check the volume levels. I know it sounds obvious but that's why people overlook it. If your game works then it might have independant volume levels. Check to see if wav/mp3 if muted or low. When XP shuts down and starts up it uses default levels, that's why you hear it then.

I've already installed a new version of Direct x... and checked the sound levels. hehe... but not until after I read to do that on another site somewhere. But I didnt know that about the independant volume levels! That sounds like it could be it! Where do I go to check if I have independant volume levels?

If sound works in the game then I doubt that it is hardware or even driver related.

sorry but if the game does dictate it's own volume then that doesn't help explain why it doesn't work in windows as windows should be governed by the volume levels that're usually found in the taskbar.

try expanding the list of options by clicking on options/properties
look at all the options and see in any are turned off or low.

it is strange I'll give you that.

http://www.free-codecs.com/
might help if you install the k-lite mega pack from this site, no promises but it might.

Sound Problem

Try this:
1. My Computer > Control Panel > Sound And Audio Devices
2. Click the first Advanced button
3. First see any of these are on mute or on very low volume, if not click on Options > Properties and click all of the check boxes (you can skip thinks like Microphone if you wish but there is no advantage in doing so)
4. Once again check for muted or low-volumed bars, and obviously increase or un-mute the volume bars

Hopefully it will work.
